Twinkie came to us as an owner surrender to get her out of harms way. She is only 11 months old and has had a rough go already. We are happy we have her to place her in a safe, secure, and loving home. She did not know how to walk on the leash at first, but within a week has already learned to nicely accompany us! She loves petting and affection and she gives lots of solicitous licks as she puts her paws on our legs to get closer to us. She was a big insecure of the camera, and initially of new locations and situations, but with a safe and predictable human (and of course some yummy treats) she is surprisingly trusting. Twinkie has met some children and did fantastic! She has ignored the shelter cats, but that may be inconclusive since she is adjusting to other things right now. She was very underweight, but with a good appetite, she shows improvement already. Twinkie met both male and female dogs today and although she was submissive and didnt really play yet, she showed no aggression towards them. Twinkie's adoption fee is $250 and includes spay, current vaccines, microchip, free vet visit, 30 days free pet health insurance, and custom engraved ID tag.

Huxley was brought in by the police as a stray, but they knew who his owner was. Having way too many dogs, Huxley spent alot of time in a crate in a very small trailer with no real yard. He is 3 years old, and, oh my, does he love working for treats! Its hard to see in the photos, but he knows how to sit on cue and loves to offer his paw for a shake. We have no idea how his muzzle became so scarred. It does not appear to be the cause of dog bites or from fighting. He definitely is not a fighter! He did great in playgroups today with female dogs. He is tidy in his kennel and waits to potty outside. He is quiet in his kennel, he has a very nice focus on his handler, and he really enjoys training time. His haircoat and skin will benefit from good nutrition and regular grooming. His nails were very long and he allowed the trainer to clip a few of them. He knows sit, lay down, and shake. He loves exploring with his nose! Lots of potential in this one! Pupdate - Huxley's scarring and hair loss is already looking so much better. Good nutrition and great care is making a big difference. He is absolutely ball crazy. He loves to chase and fetch anything we throw. He did well with a child that came to play with him, but we always recommend supervision, because he is powerful, focused, and really, really, really wants that ball thrown or that treat delivered for obedience! Huxley's adoption fee is $150.00 and includes neuter, current vaccines, microchip, free vet visit, 30 days free pet health insurance, and custom engraved ID tag.

Dolce was adopted from us a year and a half ago and was just returned for aggression towards her roommate dog and the cat. Yes, she does have a prey drive, but she does not start trouble with dogs on the other side of the fence unless they are barking and lunging at her. Then she barks back. Dolce is an absolute people lover! She is great with strangers, she is good in the car and likes to go for rides, she has a nice confidence, and she is very food motivated, making any training a breeze. Housetrained, this girl is ready to go to her new home. Although Dolce would prefer not to live with a cat or another dog, nor should she go to a dog park, she is very safe with neutral dogs. This girl is totally trainable and we find her easy to redirect away from other dogs or cats. She is a terrific medium size and if you want a snuggly companion, she's your gal. Dolce's adoption fee is $175 and includes spay, current vaccines, microchip, free vet visit, 30 days free pet health insurance, and custom engraved ID tag.

Bullwinkle was brought in as a stray and wasnt claimed by an owner. He is a youngster, still such a pup, at 11 months of age. He is wiggly and silly, and sometimes he is shy around new people or in new locations. He gets over it quickly, though. He loves treats and has a very gentle mouth taking treats. During his body handling he didnt resist at any part of it, it just made him very wiggly and goofy. He needs to learn good leash manners and his basic cues, but he is a sweetheart. He is more comfortable meeting women than men, and with men will do a little submissive pee. He did great in playgroup with a female dog and shows no aggression. Pupdate - Bullwinkle is overwhelmed at the chaos, noise, and agitation coming from the other dogs. He displays his stress through what we call "fooling around." He jumps up, he paws, he doesn't settle easily, and he needs out of here and in to a home! Gunner was originally adopted from us as a young pup. He is 1 year old now, but when the new baby came along, the baby had allergies to Gunner so he was tearfully returned to us. Gunner is housetrained, crate trained, and he is fantastic with children. Slightly on the timid side, he is first shy when meeting strangers. When given the opportunity to sniff and approach at his pace, he quickly relaxed and became a loving, cuddly, and affectionate boy. The change of losing his family and home has been traumatic and Gunner just kind of tried to disappear in a corner of his kennel. With patience, gentle coaxing, and treats, Gunner ventured outside where he met lots of new furry friends and he just came alive! He loves being with other dogs and they definitely bring out the confidence in him. He is nervous in the car, but he really wants to please his beloved owners by not showing any aggression through is timidity. Pupdate - Gunner really does love children and is very patient and kind with them. However, he thinks chickens are toys, so he should not live where he has access! She is affectionate and very loving, but she doesn't seem to want anything to do with other dogs! Nasha is treat motivated and if you teach her with kindness and patience, force free, she pays you back with that sweet smile and plenty of adoring looks and licks. Jasmin cant catch a break. She came to Home At Last in the Dalles back in 2013 as a young stray. She was adopted by someone who ended up giving her away to someone else somewhere along the line. This last person then returns her to us because they were unable to care for her any longer. It is amazing that Jasmin is still such a stellar girl! She was textbook perfect for her temperament testing, and this girl just loves handling and affection. At 7.5 years old, there will be no surprises with this girl - what you see is what you get. She is calm, yet can be fun and playful; she is safe, we think she could live with anybody, any age. She will bark for attention when she sees us from her kennel but cant be with us, but when she is in a room with us, or even just snuggling on a comfy bed, she is very much the couch potato. She was previously housetrained, but we always recommend not giving a new dog too much freedom until they show their reliability in pottying outside. She has some mild separation distress when her people leave and should be crated when and if she is left home alone and supplied with sturdy toys to chew. She is an absolute staff favorite. Jasmin loves playing with all other dogs. Jasmin's adoption fee is $125 and includes spay, current vaccines, microchip, free vet visit, 30 days free pet health insurance, and custom engraved ID tag.

Meet Sammie! She is a 1 + year old Kelpi mix. Sammie is observant and a bit cautious, but will thrive in an experienced home with a consistent and predictable routine. She loves to be petted and get affection, but only when she is given the chance to approach at her own pace. Sammie does well with other dogs her size and loves to play fetch. She needs a home without small animals as she tends to think they're toys and has a high prey drive. She is crate trained, housetrained when given consistent opportunities to potty outside, she loves to ride in the car, as well as on a boat, and knows all her basic commands. She mildly guards her food bowl from humans, so she probably would be best in a home with no small children. Dont get us wrong, Sammi is not unfriendly, she just isnt a social butterfly and doesn't want to be put in a position where strangers force themselves on her. Sammie's adoption fee is $175 which includes her spay, microchip, up to date on all shots, a free vet visit, 30 days of pet insurance, and a free i.d tag.

Disco came to us as a transfer from a shelter in Salem. This handsome boy has quickly become a staff favorite. He easily meets strangers and bonds quickly. He is affectionate and well behaved, and he did great for his body handling and food bowl testing. He was curious about the test cat, but results were inconclusive, if not indicating that he was more worried about the cat than anything. He knows his basic cues and knows how to "shake". He is eager to please and he is smart. He does best with female dogs rather than males. He enjoys romping around the play yard and playing with toys although he does show some barrier frustration (growling and posturing) with male dogs. He displays a nice confidence level and we know he will make someone a loyal companion. Pupdate - Disco seems to show some reactivity towards the shelter cat, so lets be safe and say "no" to cats. Disco had great play dates with several different females today and did fantastic with them. Biggie Smalls came to us as a transfer from a Goldendale rescue. He was in playgroups there with other dogs and was reported to have done very well. Biggie is about 2 years old and he is friendly and outgoing, but he is strong as an ox, so you better be strong enough to handle him on leash. He is used to pulling wherever he wants to go sniff and explore, so he will need work on that. We are recommending a "no small children" home because he does guard his food from us and we dont feel a baby or toddler can understand to let him eat in peace. He was very affectionate and sat at our feet, leaning in for petting, and he enjoyed a good brushing. He met a young female dog today and wasnt all that interested in her. He did fine and showed no aggression, but preferred to enjoy all the wonderful new smells in the yard. He will benefit from force free training to learn that he can get all the things he wants if he shows us good non-pulling behaviors. Guarding a food bowl is an easily modified behavior, but is not for the faint of heart or for someone who will use force and "dominance" to assert their superiority over a food bowl! We can show you how we work on it as well as encourage you to leave him alone at his food bowl while he eats. He does enjoy treats and will take them very gently from our fingers. Biggie Small's adoption fee is $175 and includes neuter on June 7th, current vaccines, microchip, free vet visit, 30 days free pet health insurance, and custom engraved ID tag.

Xena was brought in to us as an owner surrender after family decided that Xena deserved a much better life than what she had. She had been living in the back of a pickup or on a chain, so this doll isnt housetrained and hasnt been taught her basic cues. She just had a huge change in her life today, and at 1.5 years old, we know the best is yet to come for her! At first she was preoccupied and a bit nervous around new dogs, but within a short period of time, and having met lots of nice dogs of both sexes, she just opened right up and played! Being restrained for testing was difficult and she yelped, but she never offered to bite. She wasnt interested in food or treats, but she does love to play with squeaky toys! She has been around younger children, but may be too worried about toddlers who grab at her or try to climb on her. We will post more as we get to know this active and energetic girl better! Pupdate - Xena has gotten much more comfortable here and she displays a sweet temperament, as well as being less energetic. She is a playgroup superstar and loves all the other dogs she has met. She has also gotten more affectionate as she has "detoxed" from her prior experiences living in that pickup truck bed. Max was unbelievably abandoned in a way too small crate at 9;30 at night at the shelters gate. He has a microchip which gives us his date of birth, but attempts to contact any registered owner are fruitless. Poor Max is very underweight and we wish we knew his story. He is 2.5 years old, he is a mix of probably a Shepherd and a sight hound, and he is very affectionate and friendly, with a tiny bit of neediness in there. He will jump up for attention, but he is not that interested in food or treat rewards. He can be whiny and vocal like alot of German Shepherds, but its also part of his playstyle with other dogs. He does great in playgroups with both sexes and sizes. He may know some basic obedience cues and he allowed some brushing and nail trimming. He was interested at first in the test cat, but then lost interest. Maybe the test cat needed to run away! Max is a nice dog that didnt deserve to be abandoned. Pupdate - We were concerned about how boney and thin Max was so he had a blood panel run at the vet. His blood work came back normal and healthy, and we have discovered that he loves having chunky canned food mixed in with the kibble, and we hope to see his ribs and hip bones disappear very soon! He is a really nice dog and loves affection and petting. He still sometimes whine when he's playing with other dogs, but he is much quieter now that he has grown accustomed to our routine. Max has met young children and done very well with them. Max's adoption fee is $175 and includes neuter, current vaccines, microchip, free vet visit, 30 days free pet health insurance, and custom engraved ID tag.

Patton came to us from Save A Stray in Burns. He is about 1.5 years old and his owners were convinced to surrender him to the rescue there because he was being chained 24/7. A second home took him in, but the resident dog did not like him and Patton ended up being crated all the time so there would be no fighting. So you can see, he did not have a great start and so much is new to him. He is a Plott Hound mix with a beautiful brindle coat. He knows his basic cues, although he does pull on the leash. Schmitty came to us as a transfer from a high kill shelter. He is a young adult and he knows his basic cues like sit and down. He is very food motivated and takes treats rather roughly. Schmitty would not be appropriate for a home with small children because he is very aroused by quick motions, grabbing, and manipulation. He needs gentle, calming reassuring touch, then he just melts into you. He may have been handled roughly in his past, because he becomes defensive and mouthy when paws and tail are handled. He also is very sore after his neuter, so these things will definitely need to be worked with in his new home. He initially guarded his food bowl, but some of that is because he is hungry and food motivated, and he has already shown great progress in his resource guarding training. He had a great session today with the trainer and was showing her a much less anxious, affectionate, and sweet dog. The shelter is a very stressful place, and in the right home we think he will blossom. He likes other dogs, but when a human is present that he is somewhat bonded with, he will guard them from the other dogs. Dog parks would probably be a bad idea. When left alone in a playyard with another dog, he does just fine. Handsome Schmitty is not suitable for every home but if you've got skills in force-free training and because he is so food motivated, Schmitty will flourish. Schmitty's adoption fee is $175 and includes neuter, current vaccines, microchip, free vet visit, 30 days free pet health insurance, custom engraved ID tag, and consult with our trainer.

Moose came in as an owner surrender and boy are we happy he's here! What a great boy of 8-9 months old; so friendly and outgoing. He was in playgroups all day long with lots of different dogs and he's got great doggie communication skills. He is housetrained, crate trained, walks fine on the leash and has begun some basic training, but he will need additional work on not jumping up! He is so friendly, he loves being right wherever we are, getting lots of petting and attention. He is very treat motivated, he is not a loud barky type, and, well, he's just such a delightful boy! His fur is silky soft and we believe he is a mix of a lot of different breeds. He does not guard his food from humans, and he did excellent on his temperament testing. Pupdate - Moose was adopted and was loved in his home for a little over 1 year. When the baby came along and became somewhat mobile, Moose became afraid of him. Moose is fine with older children.
